As the digital counterpart to flipchart and whiteboard, Sheets are the most important tool for content on cannyboard. With the writing and sketching function of Sheets and the use of Notes for additional text, image and video content, information can be communicated clearly. The possible applications range from entire previously prepared presentations to interactive workshops.
Sheets allow you to present ideas quickly and easily, but drawing freely from the hand is often time-consuming and requires some practice. To make your work easier when illustrating your content, you can use the cannyboard writing and sketching templates. You can upload the image files to Media Notes and use them as templates for Sheets.

Basics about templates
File format
Basically, you can use JPEG and PNG formats for Media Notes. However, the PNG file format is the only format that allows images with a transparent background. This has the advantage that once PNG image content is placed as a Media Note on the Workspace or Sheets, it merges visually with the background.
Please note: The PNG file has a transparent background. Different programs can display this differently. In the Chrome Browser, for example, it is displayed in black, but on the Workspace it is transparent.
Usage
The cannyboard writing and sketching templates are used as tracing templates and are therefore only used temporarily to help you write, sketch or arrange content on Sheets. Afterwards they can be removed again - you get a clean drawing or type face without disturbing aid lines. Proceed as follows:
- Create your own template or download one of the cannyboard templates.
- Create a Media Note with the corresponding image file and send it via laptop / PC to the desktop of the Sessionboard.
- Drag the Media Note onto a Sheet, scale it to the desired size and fix the image on the Sheet using the "Pin Note" function. If the PNG image file has a transparent background, it will now be hidden.
Please note: You can scale image contents assigned to the Sheet to a certain extent beyond the Sheet and fix them to the sheet size using the "Pin Note" function.
- Write or sketch with the cannyboard Pen over the guides or arrange content with their help.
- Detach the Note from the Sheet by tapping the "Pin Note" button again. You can then drag the template back onto the Sheet or delete it.
Please note: You can use templates according to this principle also in desktop editing.
Organization
There are two ways to organize your templates for quick availability and optimal use:
- Create a Master Session that serves as a template for further Sessions.
- Create a Stock Session from which you can make use when necessary.
Master-Session
The master Session contains your writing and sketching templates in the Tray of one or more Phases. The aim is to use this Session as a template for new Sessions, so that the templates are always quickly available in the Tray without occupying the Workspace.
Create a Master Session as follows:
- Create a new Session on the Sessionboard or laptop / PC.
- Create Media Notes with the appropriate writing and sketching templates as image files and send them via laptop / PC to the desktop of the Sessionboard or create them directly in the desktop editing.
- Drag the Media Notes directly into the Tray of one or more Phases or pin them onto a Sheet in the desired size before.
Please note: It is not necessary to place the same templates in each Phase of the Session. You can also copy or move the content to other Phases if necessary.
- For each new Session in which you need the created templates, duplicate the Master Session and rename it accordingly. Even if you don't need the templates at some point, they don't interfere laying in the Tray, as they don't occupy the workspace.
Stock Session
Create a repertoire of templates in a Stock Session from which you can make use at any time by copying and pasting them into another Session. For example, you can sort the templates thematically by creating them in different Phases of the Session.
Please note: This way of organizing templates only makes sense if you prepare the Sessions in desktop editing. The function to copy content to another Session is only available in Desktop Editing.
Create a Stock Session as follows:
- Create a new Session on the Sessionboard or laptop / PC.
- Create Media Notes with the appropriate writing and sketching templates as image files and send them via laptop / PC to the desktop of the Sessionboard or create them directly in the desktop editing.
- Sort the Media Notes on the Workspace and distribute them thematically in different Phases of the Session for better traceability. To do this, move the Notes manually or copy them to the next Phase.
You can also fix the Media Notes on Sheets before so that you can start writing and sketching on the Sheets directly after copying them into a new Session.
- If you have not already done so, open the Stock Session in desktop editing. Copy the required templates from the Stock Session and paste them into your newly created Session. Afterwards you can open the Session on the Sessionboard again and continue working comfortably.

Writing templates
Various rulings are available as writing templates. Rulings are aid lines that help you to write properly with the cannyboard Pen on Sheets. In addition, they can be helpful when arranging text and image content on Sheets and the Workspace.

- Squared portrait format | Squared landscape format
- Simply lined portrait format | Simply lined landscape format
- Fourfold lined portrait format | Fourfold lined landscape format
This line system helps you to create a particularly attractive and legible typeface. The letters are placed on the baseline. The upper limit of lowercase letters like o, u, n forms the centerline. The topline, on the other hand, is the upper limit for uppercase and lowercase letters that tower above the centerline like b, d, k. Towards the bottom, the bottomline forms the limit.
